The Boxcar Children 1-4 (The Boxcar Children, #1-4)

These books are fantastic! I bought this set for my 7 year old grandson. We read two chapters last night and he was completely engaged! On page 3 it says "grandmother, I can see children in my imagination! I see them walking along the street". When we get to the second chapter, it says "Why don't you read a page and I'll read the next page".

My plan is working! I hope that within a couple of evenings, he will want to read these books alone while he falls asleep. UPDATE: night 3, we read the first 5 chapters together and wakes up the next morning telling me how the books end! After I left her bedroom - assuming she was going to sleep - she pulled out the last book in the series to find out what happens to the kids! He could not wait to know! And the best part is that he took the book himself to read. I am super happy!

I remember reading (and loving!) The Boxcar Children's books when I was younger, so when my older daughter was old enough to enjoy the chapter books, I bought them immediately for her. Just as I had hoped, I'm a hit! We often read books together before bedtime and never get enough of the good old adventure. I love the lack of cell phones, gadgets and gadgets in books when the author, Gertrude Chandler Warner, started writing them in the 1940s.

Years have passed since I read the books alone and sometimes I find myself reading before where my daughter and I are in the books because I am anxious to know what's going to happen. They are simple and fun! We have given this particular box on several occasions and the recipients have always returned and expressed how much they too liked the books. They are perfect for children who are just starting to show interest in reading chapter books or for younger children who are read by an adult.

My only complaint about this set is the new cover. I miss the covers of when I was a child! But this has no influence on the stories themselves or on the memories I have of reading them as a child, and now I am creating similar memories with my children.
